What's on NAPLAN Year 9
Year 9 is the last of the four NAPLAN year levels (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9). It is made up of four tests:
- Reading — longer texts with a lean towards inference, analysis and evaluating a writer's argument.
- Writing — one extended response to a prompt, either a narrative or a persuasive piece.
- Conventions of Language — spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Numeracy — number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability, pitched at the Year 9 curriculum.
NAPLAN now runs online for most students, so questions can be multiple-choice, short-answer or drag-and-drop, and the numeracy test is split into non-calculator and calculator parts.
Numeracy at Year 9
Year 9 numeracy steps well into high-school maths: solving linear equations, index laws, Pythagoras' theorem, percentages and rates, and multi-step problem solving. Here are three original worked examples in the test style.
- Algebra. Solve 3x − 7 = 20. Add 7 to both sides to get 3x = 27, then divide by 3. Answer: x = 9.
- Indices. Simplify 2³ × 2⁴. When you multiply powers with the same base you add the indices: 3 + 4 = 7, so the result is 2⁷. Answer: 128.
- Pythagoras. A right-angled triangle has shorter sides of 6 cm and 8 cm. The hypotenuse is √(6² + 8²) = √(36 + 64) = √100. Answer: 10 cm.
- Percentages and rates. A $120 jacket is discounted by 25%. The saving is 0.25 × 120 = $30, so the sale price is 120 − 30. Answer: $90.
Reading at Year 9
Year 9 reading questions reward inference and analysis — not just finding a fact, but working out what a writer implies and how they build an argument.
- Example. A passage ends: "By the time the committee finally agreed, the funding had long since gone elsewhere." The question asks what the writer suggests about the committee. The best answer is that they acted too slowly to make a difference — the word "finally" and "long since gone" imply the delay cost them the chance, rather than stating it outright.
Conventions of Language
This test checks spelling, grammar and punctuation. Year 9 items include tricky punctuation and agreement.
- Punctuation. Choose the correctly punctuated sentence: "Neither of the students was ready for the exam." ("Neither" is singular, so it takes was, not were.)
- Spelling. Find the misspelt word in: "The goverment announced a new policy." The correct spelling is government — the second n is often dropped.
Writing
The Year 9 writing test gives one prompt and asks for a single extended response — either a narrative (a story that builds character and tension) or a persuasive piece (a clear position backed by reasons and examples). Markers look at ideas, structure, vocabulary, sentence control, punctuation and spelling, so planning a beginning, middle and end before writing pays off.
How results and proficiency levels work
Since 2023, NAPLAN results are reported in four proficiency levels for each year group, rather than the old numbered bands:
- Exceeding — the student is well above the expected level.
- Strong — the student meets challenging but reasonable expectations.
- Developing — the student is working towards expectations and may need some support.
- Needs additional support — the student is likely to need extra help to progress.

What does NAPLAN test in Year 9?
Year 9 NAPLAN has four tests: Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. Numeracy covers number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability at a Year 9 level.
Is the Year 9 practice set free?
Yes — the PDF is free to download, print and share for personal or classroom use, with no sign-up required, and the site is free while in beta.
Are these real NAPLAN questions?
No. Every question is original material written by Kids Learning Hub in the NAPLAN style. We never reproduce official ACARA papers.
How are Year 9 NAPLAN results reported?
Since 2023, results are reported in four proficiency levels for each year group: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. The old ten numbered bands are no longer used.
What level is it pitched at?
Year 9 level — algebra and indices, Pythagoras' theorem, percentages and rates, plus inference and analysis in reading. It suits Year 8 and Year 9 students preparing for the test.
