Free NAPLAN practice questions by year
NAPLAN checks how children are progressing in literacy and numeracy in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is not an exam to cram for — but a little familiarity with the format helps children show what they actually know. Here is what each year covers and how to practise calmly.
What NAPLAN assesses
NAPLAN tests four areas: Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The skills are the same across year levels — what changes is the difficulty and the expected depth.
What changes at each year level
- Year 3: the first NAPLAN. Gentle introduction to test format — short passages, basic operations, simple writing. The goal is comfort, not pressure.
- Year 5: longer texts, multi-step numeracy, more developed writing with clearer structure.
- Year 7: first secondary-school NAPLAN. More abstract reasoning, wider vocabulary, more demanding writing tasks.
- Year 9: the most advanced. Complex texts and problems, and stronger control of language expected in writing.
How to practise without the stress
- Familiarity, not cramming. A few practice questions so the format is not a surprise is worth more than intensive drilling.
- Explain every answer. The value is in understanding why an answer works, not in the tick or cross.
- Practise writing to a prompt and a timer — planning quickly is a learnable skill.
- Keep it light. NAPLAN is a snapshot, not a verdict. Calm children perform closer to their real ability.
Know the format
NAPLAN is done online for most students, with some question types (like drag-and-drop or multi-part answers) that a paper worksheet never shows. Practising in a similar on-screen format removes that unfamiliarity on the day.

Which years sit NAPLAN?
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit NAPLAN each year, testing Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.
Can you practise for NAPLAN?
Yes — mainly by getting familiar with the format and question types so they are not a surprise. Kids Learning Hub offers free practice questions with explained answers for every year level.
Are the practice questions real NAPLAN papers?
No. All Kids Learning Hub questions are original and written for this platform. We link to ACARA’s official past papers separately rather than copying them.
How much NAPLAN practice is enough?
A little, done calmly. Familiarity with the format plus reviewing why answers are right matters far more than heavy drilling.
